    I thought it was just a cleaned coin with a bit of wear.

    Is this a NEW method of hiding damage because all the old ones (like putty) are now easily looked for ?

    It's like a game, with the crooks and detectives each getting better.

    To the contrary, as PCGS says on the link I posted -

    This method has been around even longer than United States coins themselves, with many ancient gold coins having been repaired even centuries ago.

    There is a lot going on the left of the eagle's beak. That does not look natural. Perhaps there was a big black spot there like the smaller ones by the wing, "A", and "L".
