After some deliberation, I've decided to start getting a few of my coins graded. I've looked at ICG, PCGS, and NGC and have narrowed it down to the last two. I am only looking at grading 7 or 8 per year, would you recommend PCGS or NGC? I am looking at grading mostly silver dollars and a few pennies. I know both companies have "plans" which can vary based on how many you want to submit and the cost is not a significant factor. I have heard great things about both companies and the quality of their work.
To me it depends on which coins you want to have graded. Here are my recommendations based on their consistency and accuracy, IMO: Morgans -NGC Indian Cents- NGC Lincoln Cents -PCGS Classic U.S. coins (seated and bust)-PCGS Moderns -NGC Gold coins (Modern or classic) -NGC Rainbow toned coins -PCGS
PCGS especially for moderns and toned moderns. NGC details basically any toned modern and PCGS moderns bring better prices if you were going to sell.
I prefer NGC for their customer service....hands down! However, I'm not going to compare (grading) strong points of one versus the (grading) strong points of the other because their (market acceptable) policies can change. Besides the kool-aid drinkers, what I dislike the most about PCGS is that if you want to complain about them openly on the CU forums, you can kiss your butt goodbye. On the NGC forums, they don't care what you complain about as long as you keep it clean. Chris
Sorry Kurt, there is no sense in giving a black and white answer......both PCGS and NGC are recommended for some series. Both have their problems and both are strong in their own niche.
Let me add one brief comment to that: World coins = NGC (PCGS is lost here Gold = PCGS (?) Counterfeits = ICG (e.g. Micro-S Morgans - they'll slab them using a yellow label marked CF)
Well then I guess my niches just happen to align with NGC's. I remember a past post about describing PCGS fans as some kind of goose-steppers. I love that imagery. Here's the line - I found it: "PCGS fascists and goose-steppers". Tee hee hee.
I generally like ngc, but have used pcgs lately to get a few trueview pictures made. Pcgs is more expensive, and those that prefer pcgs are usually coin snobs. For that reason alone, I like ngc, haha.
I don't consider myself a coin snob or a PCGS fascist or goose-stepper, but for my niche (Lincoln's) I prefer PCGS over NGC.
I would say the same is true for 99 percent of collectors. You can figure out how they grade a lot easier using one than both. Obviously large dealers who send in a lot have an advantage in figuring out what is more likely to do better with which service, really hard to get a good grasp on that with 2-3 submissions a year like a lot of people do
