Yes, I previously purchased an AU58 example. I thought it might be interesting to have an MS example to compare the two in hand to see if there's anything more to learn about this anomaly - die markers, etc. It's strange that the same exact coin sold in 2023 and nobody gave it a premium for the OGH (sold $159). This time it sold for twice as much. Evidence of how fickle auctions are I guess. The average of 8 other GC sales over the past 14 years is $148 and two of those were also OGH, one of them CAC. The previous sale: https://www.greatcollections.com/Coin/1442878/1909-Liberty-Nickel-PCGS-MS-63-OGH-1st-Gen I'll update the other thread regarding the broken BBB.
I’m going to offer a less popular opinion. A lot of rattlers and OGH’s I see in auctions appear to be less than desirable for the grade. Unsightly toning is common, likely due to the coin “turning in the holder” “, being overgraded to begin with, or a combination of the two. Since it has been common knowledge for decades that PCGS graded more conservatively during that era, we should expect that most of the undergraded examples have long since been cracked out, leaving us the dreck. This is not to say that there aren’t lots of exceptions, but I think a lot of people are looking at the holder more than the coin when bidding.
Of course, it’s the coin that should count most. But remember that some of the old holders predated +/- grades. The only time I got a higher grade on a regrade from PCGS was a coin in a rattler … it went from MS64 to MS64+. Some folks may bid higher for a coin in an older holder because they think it has a decent chance of going up in a regrade. For some coins, that ½ point increase can mean hundreds or thousands of dollars in value … high grade CC Morgans for example. Mike
Agreed. Sometimes it just boils down to bidder insanity. The Gen 1.2 holder is common according to PCGS. I see the coin as fairly graded - there are a lot of bag marks and other MS63 in the same OGH look better. Even if they thought it would grade 64, none of the 19 previously sold on GC went for more than $300.
