Thanks! Yes it's also made me more aware of what a CNG coin might actually look like in hand versus their photo. I recently was bidding on a Victoria "Godless" florin that had a similar look in one of CNG's recent auctions. (Unfortunately I was blown out of the water in the bidding.)

Yeah that's a die crack. The reverse die was evidently not quite as fresh as the obverse!

    hamman88 Spare some change, sir?

I just read Andrew Roberts book on Napoleon, looking to get some Napoleon coins as well. Did you know you can pick up a Légion d'honneur cross for like $2000? I'm keeping an eye for nice one out.

No I didn't, that's really cool! Andrew Roberts' book is terrific. I read it not long ago, and it played a major role in developing my interest in this era of history. Couldn't recommend it highly enough!

I’ll have to look for that on Audible- see if it’s an audiobook too.

Edit: nope, don’t see it, but I did already have his The Storm of War (about WW2) in my wishlist.

I'd skip his Churchill book, that was a chore.

I have a Churchill book in my Audible library (it was free). I might start it before too long. But the author of that one was Leonard Wibberly.

I commute an hour’s round trip to work each day, so most of my “reading” is audiobooks.

To bring us back to the topic of this thread, maybe I’ll look for one about Napoleon. (They don’t seem to have the Andrew Roberts one, as previously mentioned.)

Loved your article and this period of history. I was thrilled with the quality of this 1808 5 francs when I got it. The seller's photos did not do it justice, and neither do mine! Attached are three sets of photos I've taken from different angles, including the first one using only natural light. Thanks for the kind words! That 5 francs is a beauty! I love that cameo effect in the first photo. I'll bet it's truly a gem in the hand.

Very cool coin and a nice write-up!
The video definitely helps show the true beauty of the coin!

I had the same opinion. It could come back details for the rim. And I don't think PCGS will give PL to AU coins. NGC has given PLs to US coins but I have not seen world PLs (can't find something on their website to confirm if they give it or not).

I'm currently a little more than halfway through the audiobook version of Michael Broer's Napoleon: Soldier of Destiny. I've been listening to it on my daily commute.

20+ hours is an awful lot of Napoleon for my attention span, and it's been a little bit of a slog at times, but it's held my interest enough to keep going. Where I am now in the book, he's not Emperor yet, so things will likely pick up. The narrator is good.

Nice! I will have to take a look at that one.

Browsing this and some other similar books on Amazon, I'm reminded of this excerpt from the introduction of Andrew Roberts' biography of Napoleon: "More books have been written with Napoleon in the title than there have been days since his death in 1821."

I believe the Broers book is currently a freebie if you have an Audible membership. Was for me, anyway. I only get one paid credit a month with my membership, and I didn’t have to spend it to listen to this book. It was free.
