Looks like the investor class is selling all the high end Greeks they bought during the economic downturn almost all at once.

Well, I don't think we need anything that extreme. If I quit law and moved into a more rewarding career, like gogo dancer, I might actually be able to afford a few of those.

Problem is I don't think the ladies would pay much to see a fat ambulance chaser shaking on a stage. I might need to pump some iron before making my professional debut.

I got this in my email this morning and really enjoyed looking at all the coins that I can't even dream about affording. More power to the people who can. There are some real gems.

I think it's sad that the lots (ie. Coins they can't be bothered to list individually) are the type of coins 95% of us in this thread would go crazy for and would generate a lot of interest here. Let's face it, we are peasants to the target audience for this auction. Oh well, at least the field of ancient coins has a lot of nice stuff to offer even to us peasants.

I wouldn't be surprised to see some of those lots broken down by the winners and offered individually at Agora Auctions and other auction houses that cater mostly to us average peasants. I know if I was a dealer that's what I'd be hunting after in this auction... those nice coins in lots that would do well at smaller auctions but would get overlooked by the big fish bidding at this auction.

PS: Anyone notice all those Trajan Decius and family coins for sale? Looks like a nice sizeable release of them into the market will be under way now that the big wig collector (hoarder) of them has decided to start selling his collection. This is a nice start...I hope he releases lots more soon.

Can't wait for the day to arrive when a hoarder of Augustus coins to decide to sell his collection/or for his family to sell them and to see hundreds of them flood the market. At least that's what I keep hoping for so I can get me a decent one at a good price.

It tries to load, but I can't actually see the catalog. I got it to load on my phone, but it's kinda small for reading stuff like this.

I would suggest trying a tablet if you have one.

Wow, Sallent. Why such negativity about this Gemini auction?

Like CNG and other auction houses do with their print auctions, HJB has stacked higher-end coins in this auction. That's what print auctions (or flagship auctions) are for-- showcasing a company's better consignments.

As for the coins themselves, they appear to be amassed from a wide variety of sources including private collections and museum deaccessioning. There are even some consignments from at least one CoinTalker. Acquiring coins for a print auction takes place over a long period of time. From what I'm told, sometimes coins are committed to a future print auction a year or more ahead of time.

I took a quick look at the offerings and found many relatively inexpensive and desirable coins I will be shooting for, including some of the small group lots. Many of the estimates are clearly too low, but I prefer that to overly optimistic estimates :). There are of course also a great number of coins I'll have to just admire in pictures :D.

For those having trouble viewing the catalog from the link posted in the OP, here is an alternative link: https://issuu.com/hjb-ancientcoins/docs/gemini_xiii

I think you read too much into my posts. No negativity here, just simple wishing I could go after the big ticket items.

  19. Carthago

Carthago Does this look infected to you?

I have 3 coins consigned to the auction.

    • Lot 134: Cassius - Gemini missed his name in the description.
    • Lot 135: Sextus Pompey
    • Lot 137: Marc Antony
All excellent coins. Bid early, bid often!
