Here is a 1916 D that came out of a collection I bought. What do you think of it? Real or fake?

    Thanks!

Solid 16-D. I own a contemporary very well done 16-D counterfeit and I see none of the signs of an added mintmark. Usually the counterfeiters will select better grade 16’s to add the phony mintmark to. That one looks solid to me.

It looks OK to me at a cursory glance, but I'll be the first to admit I am not really well-versed in the diagnostics of the fakes (mintmark shape, etc.)

    Get that puppy slabbed, ASAP!

I'm not seeing the triangular hole in the D that I expect - but I've also failed to see it in genuine specimens, so no opinion from me.

I knew there was something like that to do with the shape of the mintmark. I just couldn't remember what it was.

When the rims get worn flat the mintmark becomes flat and distorted. If that D had been added it wouldn’t be worn that flat.
