United States: 1880-S silver Morgan dollar

    NGC MS66+. Cert. #6019821-001.

    Numista-1492, Krause-Mishler-110.

    Mintage: 8,900,000.

Ex- Michael Swoveland, dba WNC Coins, LLC, Asheville, NC, 31 July 2024. Purchased in the slab, but subsequently reholdered.

The Morgan dollar (1878-1921) is perhaps the quintessential United States coin and one of the most widely collected. You probably don't need me to tell you how enormously popular they are. While I like them well enough, I've never been a diehard enthusiast like so many folks are. I am merely a Type collector, so I only need one for my collection. If you're only going to have one, it should be a high grade example, because Morgan dollars are, after all, readily available and affordable in high grade. This MS66+ example is an 1880-S, one of the most common dates seen in Gem grade. The 1880-S and 1881-S dates from San Francisco just happen to come really nice most of the time, and are relatively affordable, even in loftier grades like this.

I bought this coin in the NGC MS66+ slab, but sent it back to NGC for Photovision imaging, as I wanted nice pictures of it without having those white slab prongs in the way. So they cracked it out, photographed it in the raw, then reholdered it with the same grade and certification number. While this is a very common coin from a date that is very common in nice grades, it is the highest graded Morgan I have owned to date. I may one day replace it with a DMPL (Deep Mirror Prooflike) coin, because I like those, but until then, this one is plenty nice enough to be my single type example.

Simply lovely. I'm also on the hunt for a nice Morgan - I have one in my sights actually, hoping I can get a bit off the price though.
