I've tried googling this as much as I could but couldn't find it. I also don't have a 1700s world coin book (I might have to buy one soon). Can anyone help me identify where this was minted and suggest what its value might be?
Sorry, but I'm not sure if you're confused or I am. The double eagle is the obverse. The second photo is just me putting the coin on top of another 1/12 Thaler to show its size and likeness.
No I see what you did.. It's that when I search Double Headed Eagle I get images of coins that say it's the reverse.. for Thalers
Fair enough. I can't find that coin anywhere. It's starting to make me wonder if it truly exists. I am definitely wishing I had a 1700s book to dig into.
(German State) Schwarzburg-Sondershausen has a 2-headed eagle, with a crown overhead, the left claw holding a sword and the right claw holding an orb with a small cross. The denomination would also fit. In 1764, the Prince was Christian Gunther III, and you see from the 9 to 11 o'clock position the word "Gunthe...?" S-S was a small enclave within the borders of Thuringia.
doug444 has it right. It is a 1/12 Taler coin from Schwarzburg Sonderhausen. HC AS are the initials of the Mintmaster at Arnstadt where the coin was struck. Heinrich Christian Andreas Siegel - 1763-1764.
