United States: 1822 copper Coronet Head large cent PCGS AU58. Cert. #60073731. Numista-14203, Krause-Mishler-45.1. Mintage: 2,072,339. Ex-"dpvilla", Collectors Universe, 19 October 2024. Purchased in the slab. This type is also sometimes referred to as the "Matron Head" type, for its more mature looking and less glamorous depiction of Lady Liberty. My previous best of this type was a nice 1818 PCGS MS62 BN example, which had quite a lot of red remaining for a BN coin. I suspect that piece came from the Randall Hoard, which had been found in a keg under a railroad platform in Georgia in 1869. I sold that Mint State example during lean times several years ago, and miss it. However, this current 1822 coin, despite being just shy of Mint State (AU58) is still quite appealing, and a bit scarcer. And according to the PCGS price guide, it is worth more than the MS62 1818 was. 093500
Can any of you EAC types tell me the Newcomb number and relative scarcity of the variety? Thanks in advance.
Beautifull coin there! Are you sure you're not @johnmilton? Excellent specimen if you ask me. Someone took good care of the old gal.
