United States: 1836 gold Classic Head half-eagle ($5.00) PCGS XF40. Cert. #43096849. Numista-40781, Krause-Mishler-57. Mintage: 553,147. Ex-Heritage Auction #132320, Lot 26081, 17 May 2023. Purchased in the slab. This is easily the nicest Classic Head half-eagle I've owned- and due to my budgetary limitations, it is likely to remain so for quite some time. I've only had one or two previously. The best of those was an 1834 ANACS XF40 example, many years ago, but it was nowhere near the equal of this coin in eye appeal. I just like the color and wholesome look of this piece. I also love the style of the eagle on the Classic Head coins. 113572
Great looking coin, I have one as well, not as nice as yours but same year! Yours is super nice but I like my babe with the dirt in her eye, adds character!
Ol' Miss DirtyEye indeed has character! And she's not bad looking at all! Fairly close to mine, I reckon. It's hard not to love this early gold. Most of us will never be able to touch the even earlier US gold- that pre-1834 stuff. So these are nice to have, in a price range that we mere mortals can afford (with a little work), right?
