I was reading that this date might have had 1-2 coins released from the GSA. I have also heard there were really 0. I was just wondering if anybody has heard of ones existence?
I don't know where you found that information, but there were tens of thousands of the 1892-CC released in the Treasury hoard (GSA) of the early 1970's. In total, there were 1,352,000 circulation strikes minted. Chris
PCGS doesn't even include 1892 in their GSA Carson City Morgan Registry Set. I read somewhere that one each of 1889-CC, 1892-CC and 1893-CC were found in the GSA sales, but can find no record of any of them ever transacting.
I remember where I saw this - from Rusty Goe at Southgate Coins. http://www.southgatecoins.com/gsa-carson-city-hoard-history/ If Rusty Goe disagrees with Q. David about a Carson City coin, Q. David is wrong.
There was 1 89cc Dave. You know that right? It was shleped around to various banks and other locations to promote the sale. Some say it was not in the treasury bags and intentionally placed in a GSA holder to promote the sale. I believe it is being offered for sale by the owner currently for well into six figures. Maybe @blu62vette can chime in if he stops by
Thanks Super Dave for backing me up. I've never heard of one. I was just wondering if one existed in a GSA holder, and what the high value would be?
Yeah, in fact you quoted me mentioning that 1889.... If Todd disagrees with Rusty Goe, Rusty is still right. Google Rusty up to see what he's done for and with Carson City coinage; you won't have any problem finding results.
I just finished reading 'Carson City Morgan Dollars, Featuring the Coins of the GSA Hoard' by Adam Crum, Selby Ungar and Jeff Oxman this weekend. The official GSA records provided by the government when all the coins were inventoried back in 1970 a single 1889-CC, 1892-CC and 1893-CC were reported. The 1889-CC has since turned up and was graded as MS-62 DPL by NGC. The 1892 and 1893 have never surfaced. There was speculation that the '89, '92 and '93 were salted by one of the experts and dealers who were brought in to over see the handling of the Morgan's and to establish standards that were used to sort the coins by quality. The '89, '92 and '93 were listed as being included into the "Mixed CC" category since there were only 1 of each date and they had no idea how distribute them fairly. Incidentally the "Mixed CC" category is where the scratched and toned coins were lumped into. So it's possible that those two coins are somewhere in a drawer unopened, or perhaps they were cracked out of the holder shortly after being received by the purchaser without knowing of their rarity in a GSA holder.
I really like the 1892 CC Morgan for some reason? I own a VF 20. I hope to upgrade it sometime in my life. Although it's not a real priority.
The 92 and 93 have been seen but it is widely believed one has been cracked and the other is held privately. The 1889-CC recently sold to a collector. While it had been on a website for $1,000,000 it sold for less, but still a lot of money.
