I have two for this one.. my original and the upgrade... why post the original "detail" coin? Well you'll see and I will say the pic does that coin no justice
Let's see LordM is running slow tonight so.... 1864-1909 Indian Head Cents would be next... I need to take some better pics of this one... edited: to replace pics lol......
Yep, thanks. I have been required to actually work while at work tonight. Go figure! Once I get caught up, I'll post mine. Thanks for starting us off.
Having worked night desk at a hotel myself (Cyr hotel on block island RI) I can well understand the "work" that comes up late Friday night Hope all goes smoothly for you
As @mrweaseluv noted, it is now time for our next type, and now for the first time in our Virtual 7070, we come to a type which is widely collected by date and mint in its own right. I am of course referring to the Indian Head Cent Bronze Oak Wreath (1864-1909). Here is my current type coin. It is in an old NGC holder and I suspect it must have mellowed somewhat since it was graded decades ago. I would call it a BN coin now rather than RB. But I'm OK with that, since I'm in it for less than BN money, and it has nice color. I do like a BN coin with nice color. That was difficult to capture in photographs, however. And on the other end of the spectrum, since I've been posting stuff from my holey 19th century cork board type set, here is the bronze Indian from that. It's an 1864-L, and pretty nice for a holey, actually. (But I'll bet @HoledandCreative has a better one.)
Here's one of the 'keys'. Raw and not in great condition, but hey, it's a key Another one that's raw. I acquired this one in 1975, before there were grading companies entombing these bad boys.
I beg to differ. Full LIBERTY and veins in the feathers. Nice even coloration with just a hint of woodgrain look. No problems or distractions. Looks pretty nice to me. The only time I completed an Indian cent collection, my 1909-S was only VG-F.
Instead of my 1873, which has been posted somewhat recently, I went for the coin actually in my 7070 for this slot. It's a great looking coin, so I figured I'd let it out for some fanfare lol!
Speaking of 1907… I also popped dozens of ‘em outta the dirt, back in my diggin’ days. Most were rough, of course, but some were quite nice (for dug examples, anyway).
OK, folks, it’s Sunday the 25th, and now we move into the Lincoln cents. The first subtype we’ll encounter is of course the Lincoln Cent VDB (1909). As you know, this one-year type featured the initials of designer Victor David Brenner below the wheat ears on the reverse. My 1909 VDB cent is rather special because it has an interesting if not especially well known pedigree. This coin was given to me by Josh Zachman (@kazuma78) from an original roll saved by his great-grandfather Leroy Zachman in 1909. Leroy Zachman was an Ohio banker and also an avid collector. His signature appears on banknotes of the early 20th century. A number of original mint-fresh coin rolls he saved before WW1 are in the hands of Josh and his other descendants. As such, this coin has a known, unbroken provenance dating all the way back to the time it was issued in 1909. I was pleased with the grade it received at PCGS. Newspaper clippings about Leroy Zachman when he was an old man:
Neat story! When I was younger, my friend and 3rd baseman on our softball team was from Marion. I played a few softball tournaments there. How great would it be to get an uncirculated 1909-S VDB at face from the bank?
