Which set should i start on next? I've already started on the sets that are in circulation for clad, and I started on the silver dimes. I've narrowed it down to about 3. The choices are either, Buffalo nickels, 1932- 1964 silver quarters, or the mercury dimes. Which one do you think will be cheaper and/or easier to complete? Thanks!
I like buffalo nickels a lot, so I would say start one with those. But have you finished the clad coin collections yet? If you havnt you should try to finish those first
no i havent finished the clad sets. I need a couple of each to complete them. I'm hoping to complete the halves soon with the exception of the 70-d and the mint sets
I agree with clad king. Most of the set you can get for just above melt, I assume that you are doing it in circulated condition. You can probably pick up some uncs for little more than melt. And you can work on a nice big, impressive set until you get to the two biggies (1932 D & S). However, suggestion: if you can afford it, buy the keys as soon as possible. The better dates always will increase the quickest.
which set Howdy, Congratulations on what you've done so far. As mentioned, the washington quarters would be the cheapest, particularly if you start with the short set from 1941 forward. Mercs are fun and the only expensive ones are the 16D and the 21s (not including the overdate). I love buffalos and the're a lot of fun too. Some are a bit expensive, particularly in the higher grades, but they're all obtainable. I'd suggest that you start whichever one you really like the looks of. good luck, rono
The Washingtons seem to me to be the set to complete. Somewhat easier to do, and becoming more collected (read more valuable) every day.
Mike's comments are very apt, and I agree. The quarters, read pre-states (eagle) quarters have a long way to go.
I like large coins too, thats why I like halves, and hopefully the ywill be complete soon. I will go to the coin shop soon and get both of the silver quarters folder and start to work on them. How much do those to go for in a mid grade?
I agree, I'd go with the pre-50 states Washington Quarters. I'd try to complete the 32-64 set first then work on the rest if you go with these. The 32-d and 32-s arent getting any cheaper. When I start a set or series of anything most of the time I like to buy the keys and semi-keys first to get them out of the way. Thats what I did with my Peace Dollar set and some of the others. Obviously, I like to work on the older sets before I work on modern sets although I do have some modern sets started I prefer older coins. I'm sure the Washington Quarters would be the least expensive set to complete in nice circulated grades
I would suggest the Washington Quarters also---if you think $150 is up there I can't suggest the Dimes as even an AG 1916-D would run you about $600!! Most of the quarters you will be able to pick up cheap for maybe $1-$2 each! The 32-D and S are the only ones in the set that will cost alot more. Now if you want to try what I'm doing and do the whole set in AU/BU then many of the coins will be over $100 mark....but they are really pretty looking!!! Speedy
I have to agree with the general remarks. Washington quarters. And as Speedy says, they sure do look nice in AU/BU shape. I'm not sure about the $1 - $2 per coin comment since that is basically below melt and I don't know who is selling below melt these days. Please give us addresses of people selling silver quarters at $1.50 a pop!!! And while I agree that Keys and semi-Keys are good to get early, it isn't going to be forever that you can pick up MS-xx quality silver Washingtons for under $5 and $10 either. So it's a bit of a crap shoot as to what to buy first!
I was for awhile at a show a few weeks ago---I think right now my dealer is at $1.75-$2 per coin....but I'd have to check again Speedy
Now I'm going to have to look around. If Washington's are selling below melt, it probably is a good idea to start collecting them. I can't imagine why these things happen, but occasionally they do.
The $150-$200 range for those 2 coins in Fine is a good buy. I would think there is more ceiling in them.
Out of those you mentioned, as has been said, the quarters are probably the cheapest to complete. However, I don't like Washington Quarters, so I'd go with the Mercury Dimes out of those that you mentioned. Also, in my opinion, I wouldn't try to put together a set just because it's cheap...put it together because you like it! Now, maybe you were asking which one is the cheapest because you like all three roughly the same. That's a different story.
