I recently bought a set of five liberty head nickels. 1908--1912. It's just the first commemorative mint set. I bought for $1.00 I just figured that they had been swapped out for circulated ones due to the wear on them. However. Once taking a better look at them I notices the rims on every one is oddly shiny. Like super shiny. I don't know if it's bc they have been in the folder or what. Any thoughts?
That is the first time I have ever seen a coin held in that manner. Interesting! I don't know why it would be so shiny
Haha. Yeah I wasn't able to sit still long enough for the camera to focus, so I used the closest thing that I could make a holder out of haha classy huh
Could have been polished (most likely), and it's hard to tell with that picture but I guess it's wildly possible that it was a proof that went into circulation and got worn down? I don't have anything to base this on, but if it was, it would definitely be a "lowball" one of a kind!
Good buy for a Buck. The set looks like a look alike government set originally made to sell. They might have been polished or buffed to sell as gifts for relatives of collectors to buy for collectors. It says First Commemorative Mint.
I agree! Here is their website.. I want to share this webpage with you - http://www.fcmint.com/ They sell Junk! $119.99 for Gold Plated Quarters
Yeah it's definitely not a set that worth anything other than face value .but I didn't have any of these in collection. And for a buck why not right. It's definitely not a great collection set. But I think it's bc they have been in that folder for so long is proudly y the rims are so shiny. It's only the rims. The obverse is pretty worn, the reverse is actually not bad.
Paddyman98 thanks for your educational posts to reduce sales of suspect product to inexperienced collectors.
I hope people aren't spending that much for a set like that. I really haven't bought many coins. And the ones that I have bought I found at an antique/junk store so I got them for a good price. This set the guy wanted five bucks for. I talked him down
You did fine! The web site probably originally sold the set for $49.00, A buck for 5 V nickels is very good. At least $0.45 each.
Thank you ! I'm super not rich, nor well off, i make great moeny doing asbestos abatement but my coin budget is next to nothing. Like a dollar a month hahah. so I have to be as cheap and smart as possible with every purchase.i like to look at the garage sales, antique store, when I'm not CRH
