For many ancient collectors the bronzes of Maximianus and Diocletian are pretty mundane and we kind of pass right by them without much thought. That was until I was sorting out some new coins that just came in this afternoon and came across this Antoninianus of Diocletian: Diocletian, AE Antoninianus Rx:VICTORIA AVGG, Diocletianus and Maximianus each holding scepters and shaking hands, Victory standing between them placing her arms around their shoulders This reverse design does catch your eye.
Very fine style on that reverse. All three figures are particularly well-rendered by the celator. Moreover, the coin is nicely centered, with complete legends and good eye-appeal. I like it!
I can't agree with the idea that Diocletian is mundane and see several collectible highlights in the pre-reform period. This certainly is one. We don't see three equal figures all that often. Siscia?
