Got a letter this a.m. It sort of sounds to me like Gary is taking a step back into more of an office job. Idk. Strange letter, IMO.
Looks like Gary is doing some long-term thinking here against the day he doesn't want to be running himself ragged on the show circuit any longer. DLRC is big, and has the existing clientele appropriate for Gary's traditional offerings. Not to mention younger people who don't mind running so much. I suspect this was as much a retirement buyout as anything else; DLRC has the resources to acquire even a dealer of Gary's size. Gary gets to continue being a numismatist (you don't get to where he did without being a coin geek at heart, just like us) without the burden of having to run the business side as well, and DLRC acquires excellent new stock and a high-quality customer base. Win-win, IMO.
I've met Gary Adkins at shows, he is a true gentleman. Sold my kid a nice gold coin for a pittance to sow the seeds of numismatic addiction.
As of now, Gary seems likely to be the next President of the ANA, and perhaps he wants to take that more seriously fulltime than some.
I've bought from both and Lawrence's Sunday night auction is my favorite. Adkins always has nice coins for what ever grade they are.
Didn't realize that. They may well have thrown in together as equals, then, just for the economies of scale. I consider both to be very reputable names and it couldn't hurt either for the association.
I never could figure out what they were doing with their pics. But I found their star system for eye appeal was accurate.
They're varying their technique too little between issues and conditions. Not that I blame them; you have to be pretty up on your game to shoot more than, say, 300 coins in an 8-hour day and that doesn't include postprocessing.
