I consider the like on a post to be on the post not on the coin. If a post teaches me something or adds interest to my online experience, I am more inclined to hit like. If I want to see high grade coins or rare coins I can find many online. If I get the idea that the only reason to post a coin was to gather likes, I am very unlikely to hit that button. I do not support competitive coin collecting. For the record, I do like that Titus but am no longer inclined to hit like buttons for any coin. It is an interesting type showing Domitian moving from son of the emperor to brother of the emperor and any type with a COS DES legend is a bit more interesting to me. Did anyone mention why the coin might be interesting other than it was expensive?
Dude...calm down. This isn't a competition. If all that mattered were likes, or what other people think, I would have never bothered collecting obscure and underappreciated coins like this medieval Indian: I'd be lucky to get two likes for that coin. I doubt more than one or two people here even know about the Delhi sultanate, and much less care for its coinage. And you know what? I could care less. Who gives a darn. I collect some coins most people here are not into, and could care less about, because I personally enjoy owning them. If I can't get more than 1 or 2 likes for that coin, who gives a fig? I'm not collecting coins to make anyone else here happy (except for myself). Seriously man, take a chill pill!
And a good title. My new Khosrau coin is Byzantine in style but I'm sure me putting "Persian" in the title didn't exactly help it to stand out.
Here's a rather unassuming looking coin. Common ruler? Check. Common reverse type? Yep. Missing half the date on the reverse? Uh huh. ANTONINUS PIUS, AR denarius, 18 mm, 3.01g Obverse: IMP CAES AEL ANTONINVS AVG, laureate head right Reverse: PONT MAX TR POT COS, Diana standing right, holding bow and arrow. Seller Ref: RIC III 1b; BMCRE 3 note; RSC 665a Yeah, ok, so what? Here's what: Note: Struck July 138 AD before the consecration of Hadrian. Only 2 examples in the Reka Devnia hoard. That's fewer than some types of Pertinax. Try and find another one for sale right now. Yeah, I thought so. I don't even remember how many likes it got last time I posted it. Don't care. It's one of my favorite coins.
And if I owned your coin and couldn't get more than 2 likes, it wouldn't matter to me either. You know that is a sweet coin, and enjoy owning it. That's all that matters. Believe me, I can drag out in this thread some bizarre Indian and Asian ancient and medieval coinage that most people here could not be bothered to pay even $1 for. Stuff that's just not hot or desirable in this forum. But to me those coins are special even if most other people here can't appreciate it.
Its good to see others here post and have an interest in areas aside from the usual Greek and Roman, even though I may not collect some of those areas. Gives the Ancients forum a little variety.
Here, I've only shown off this coin once and got 4 likes as this is probably way outside the area of interest if 98% of the people here. However, this is easily one of my top 20 coins in my collection of 100+ ancients. It's cheap, it ain't glamorous, and poorly understood, but I really like it and that's all that matters. If I were collecting based on what others here like, I would have never bought this coin and so would have missed out on the personal pleasure it brings me. I spend far more time holding this coin and looking at it, thinking about it, etc., than I do some of my Roman and Greek coins. And why not? Those coins are well known and not mysterious, while this one is a mystery waiting to be heard and properly understood. Unknown Sindh or Multan Kingdom AR Unit (Circa 7th or 8th Century CE) Dots and dashes perhaps representing a fire altar, Brahmi letters below; Ha Shi Reverse blank as made 16mm, 1.24g Fishman, JONS 201, Type 7A *Coin belongs to a newly discovered series still not properly understood.
Yes this. This is your second thread about being upset about how many "Likes" you get. Consider all money spent on coins as gone. If this is distressing there may be better hobbies.
Yeah ro, you have lots of cool coins...don't worry about the "likes" you get being proportional to the money you spend on a coin! not the way you want to plan your coin purchases probably. That being said, if nobody like my coin...I do get a little sad...lol! I think there are so few people in the world that actually give a $#it about ancient coins, (we certainly aren't garnering any "likes" from friends and family are we?) that it is nice to have people that share your interest in something give you a little feedback. If someone post a coin, I try to remember to give them a like. I do like to see everyone post their new coins!
IMO those type of coins are the best. If they're not popular, that means they're cheaper, which means you can afford more of them. Here's one a few (non ancients) dealers I showed it to didn't even recognize as a coin! One said it looked like a colorful rock.
