I have this beauty of a Morgan Silver Dollar here. I inherited her from my great-grandfather. I took it to a pawn shop to see what they thought, and they said it was one of the most beautiful coins they had seen of this type. I think it’s AU-55+. What are your thoughts? Thank you so much!
it's a gift from your great grandfather, that's what matters, no matter what the grade. PS It's not AU55+ maybe 45 or 50 at most.
xf-au as dwhiz said 45-50.. but I will add looking at the 2nd obverse pic it's also been cleaned.... after blowing up the pic.. I'm sure it's been cleaned... so xf-au details "cleaned"
You might try VAMWorld.com. That site deals with nothing else but Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars. I agree, close to extra fine to AU on the grading.
Agree XF-ish/harshly cleaned in spots. As mentioned above, gift from great grand Dad? Priceless heirloom......
I appreciate all of your responses. I never thought it might be cleaned. And yes, I always wish that those.white spots on the upper left were not there.
Receiving it from your Grest-grandfather is more precious than any value. I would say the coin is in XF-45 grade but it has been cleaned and that makes it a details coin. The cleaning was not the way to go on this one.
That happened most likely to remove something, there are proper ways to deal with the spot besides rubbing it. Could have been in a pocket, I am sure your Grandpa's. Priceless if you ask me.
Besides the family connection 1879-O is the first year of minting for the New Orleans mint. looks very similar to an 1880-O I bought as a kid from Jakes Marketplace. I grade mine AU-50 and would offer an opinion of the same for yours. Glad you have it. James
I’m not the best at grading raw coins but the history of a coin is most important to me … your silver dollar has personal history, numismatic history and it’s O mint!!!
I am sad to report that my great grandfather John, who gave me the coin in thhis thread, died yesterday at age 99. He was a full-blooded German, but native US Citizen who served in World War II for the US Navy. He loved coins and collecting, and gave me lots of other coins besides this one. God rest his soul. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
So sorry to hear about your loss Elisha, he sounds like he was a great man, you must feel blessed to have had him in your life. Kevin
@ksmooter61 and @Collecting Nut, I appreciate your kind thoughts. I would never have gotten into coin collecting without him starting my first collection.
