Hello Cointalk, First, I just want to say I have been reading the forum for the past several months and have really enjoyed that information and thoughts shared. I am new to coin collecting and currently still in the early learning stages. I hope this post is going into the appropriate forum. I have scouted my local area and have been very disappointed with the 1 and only coin dealer. Everytime I have gone to the see the guy ( he does however have a very nice shop) he almost treats me as an inconvience and bother that I have come to see him. However, he does have some staff that are very pleasant but it is hard to catch them at the shop. I have recently begun searching for alternative routes to collect and wonder if you guys have any suggestions besides ebay. Due to being so new, I feel the odds of being scammed are probably a LOT higher for someone newer into the hobby. I'm not looking to invest but simply enjoy the history and think that it would be neat to hand down to a grandchild one day and share the history of the variety of coins. Thanks for the feedback in advance!
There is heritage and teletrade. There are also several online dealers(I am sure someone will be along to post the link). One I have used is Harlan J Berk, but I recommend looking around and doing price comparisons. Learn before buying and you will reduce your mistakes. I like to use heritage to help with grading comparisons. Any specific types of coins you are interested in? If you have doubts about auctions on Ebay you can always ask a question here - just keep in mind you will get a variety of responses.
I agree, Heritage is great place, though a bit pricy sometimes, but safe http://coins.ha.com/ Ebay is ok if you know what to look for. I have the same problem as you, it sounds like, in that I have very limited resources in my local area as far as coin shops go. So, I do a lot of looking and a little bidding on Ebay, but only on stuff I'm sure about. Of course, you also have the US mint, if you like newer coins http://www.usmint.gov/index.cfm?flash=yes Guy~
Really an overall interest but Peace Dollars are by far my most collected. Currently I'm trying to find a decent 21 and have a long time of saving my coin collecting money for the 28. I'm also trying to fill a Dansco folder for a type set - no gold or high grades- simply trying to put a set together.
Hi and welcome to the forum!!!! Here are a list of some on-line coin dealers. you're bound to find one that you like here..http://www.coin-gallery.com/cguscoins.htm
you might pick up a copy of Coins, in the back they have a section of shows and show dates, see if any are happening near you.
Your best bet for finding a good dealer is in a magazine, as noted above, or to check out a local coin show. There are a lot of jerks at shows, but you're bound to run into a decent dealer or two or three.
Look for a local coin club. Visit a couple times, then decide if you want to join. Maybe one of those amiable employees at your local dealer knows when and if a club meets in your neighborhood, Some of my best deals came from fellow members of a coin club: buying and swapping coins. Clinker
Welcome to the forum. An on-line dealer I've been fairly happy with and who has a lot of lower-end, cheaper coins is VTcoins. Some coins are pictured, if they aren't write them an email and they'll put one up for you. Some advice, never buy sight-unseen coins unless the dealer has a full refund policy, even pictured coins can be deceiving. http://www.vtcoins.com/
Welcome! here a great site Featuring: U.S. Coin Dealers • U.S. Coin Auctions • Live Precious Metal Quotes • U.S. Coin Shows • Coin News Headlines • Bullion Coin & Precious Metal Prices • U.S. Gold Prices • Foreign Traded Gold Coin Prices http://coininfo.com/
Coin clubs and shows are great places to learn and buy as others have mentioned. Start off small until you get a better grasp but you will find many collectors and dealers that are more than helpful to the novice. Even if a show is REALLY small it can be a ball. We have a local stamp show that usually has but 3 coin dealers. I have become good friends with two brothers that run a table. Always a good conversation and I've got some good deals as well as sold to them.
well I disagree with the magazine dealer route. I have bought many coins from ebay and always receive them right away. The 'reputable' coin dealer coin I purchased July 23rd, still hasn't materialized and they are only a couple hours from me. I keep emailing them and they just keep telling me..5 to 10 business days...it is now August 10th
Welcome to the world of coins. However, please note that for every new coin collector out there, there will be less coins for me so please find another hobby. Just kidding of course. As already noted there are coin shows almost every where nowadays. If your lucky there may be some near your. Go to Google search and type in coin shows and your state. Also, you may try the Numismatic Assiciation Upcoming Shows. Some on line dealers have references to coin shows such as jmscoins at the far left of his web site. I too like VTcoins and Millersmint. I seldome buy coins on line and never from ebay. We have way to many coin shows, coin shops, coin dealers at flea markets around the Chicago area to even consider buying anything via the internet. There are 3 coin shows a month withing 15 miles of my house every month all year long. As to a dealer to stay away from it's Harlan J. Berk. The place is here in Chicago and I've been going to that place for so many years even prior to it being Berk's. They used to be a decent place but in the last several years are loaded with cleaned coins, high prices, ignorant sales people, poor selection of coins. Centered in the center of the City they just don't care since virtually millions of people pass thier place every day. I used to ask why they never go to local coin shows. Guy told me not worth thier time with little people. Once I started to ask a question and the dealer walked away saying "lunch time". That was my last trip there and I work in the area.
