It's also meaningless when we consider the fact that most detractors do not take issue with his craftsmanship. Regardless of the deflective arguments so often presented, the reality is a well made copy is still a copy, and is therefore rightly open to equal criticism. No one here, including Mr. Carr himself, has any problems with or hesitates tearing into or denigrating the "work" of other copy/fantasy producers, so there is absolutely nothing wrong with applying to him the same as he does to others.
Sorry please go read the FTC Gold Bullion Intl case decision and the updated hobby protection act, in fact here are the relevant parts below highlighted. The law is designed to protect the uninformed not those who know better. But after reading both the Gold Bullion Int case in full and the updated HPA please explain to me how his pieces are exempt and I will gladly consider your argument. I'd also ask how that his newest Peace dollar design silver medals are exempt from a copy mark, which are struck on virgin blanks and not over struck on original U.S. mint coinage of the same type which completely eliminates the prior defense. They are certainly in similitude and likeness to actual U.S. coinage and thus meet the definition of being imitation numismatic items. The updated hobby protection act even mentions Carrs own comments on the matter and then goes on to state imitation numismatic items require a copy stamp per the Gold Bullion Intl case which is the relevant proceeding case law. Although it's the usual that no one will ever addressed either of these questions on how his work is exempt or how the new pieces don't require a copy mark. https://www.ftc.gov/sites/default/f...july_-_december_1978pages_171-273.pdf#page=26 https://www.ftc.gov/system/files/do...ces/2016/10/frn_hobby_final_rule_10-14-16.pdf
I can see it now. A contest, to see who's is more of a numismatist. All are invited. Set up like jeopardy. I'll take U.S. coins for $200 Alex. . just trying to lighten up the mood of this thread. ( and keeps my mind occupied. )
I'm not reading that, not that i disregard your opinion but simply because my next post was going to be I'm tired of seeing Dan Carr post, wether it's for it or against it. In tired of hearing and seeing it! Lol, and I enjoy his work! At least the ones I bought, because of the history.
FYI, Dan never said he was planning to sue anybody. Nobody said they were. Probably the closest anyone came was me saying that if people were calling me a counterfeiter in spite of having never been charged, convicted, or even visited by the Secret Service, and I had the means to do so, I probably would. You will not find one single post where Dan says he is planning to sue anyone. This thread is now on ignore. Have fun rolling around in the pile of poop that's left of it. PS I also believe moderators should not take sides and allow people to call other people counterfeiters, especially when there's an established market for his products.
Yes, and this same thing is said, sometimes multiple times in each new thread, as if it's the first time anyone has thought of it. Of course something tells me you also already know this, and the fact is no one cares as it's beyond clear they're going to be promoted either way. Unfortunately, with the blatant advertising we're now deluged with on a near daily basis, especially considering the ridiculous amount of misinformation regularly spewed in doing so, things will likely get worse before they get better. Instead of having shill promotions, why not simply pay Peter for the privilege of advertising here? Word still gets out, the forum would benefit financially, and there almost certainly (out of respect to Peter) be less arguing. Seems like a win-win to me, especially considering the product's high cost and the fact they're made by someone who openly claims to not be doing it for the money...
I just love how the new pattern in this thread is for the DC lovers to sling a little poo (aka, dropping their "knowledge" bombs) and then ignore the thread. Speaks volumes. And btw, did you even read the comments I quoted of DC'S threats, Paul? It is truly impossible to read it otherwise, despite DC's backtracking and excuse making today.
I collect coins and currency for the beauty and history behind the coin. Currently, I think the U.S. Government is doing a poor job on both of the counts I listed. Look at how well they did when they made a gold restrike of three one hundred year old coins that did have appealing subjects on the coins. Now look at what the mint is putting out. They made a commemorative coin for the Girl Scouts and they didn't even sell enough to make expenses. I believe it was the first time the organization, the Girl Scouts, did not get any money at all from the sales of the coins. Last years National Park $5 Gold Coin had the lowest mintage (approximately 4.000) of any commemorative gold coin made, even less than the uncirculated Jackie Robinson gold coin. I'm curious to see how the new $100 gold Liberty is going to sell. It will either bomb out with collectors or do well with speculators who assume it will have a low mintage. I writing this to explain why I buy Midnight Mint coins, I think they are putting out medals that collectors like. The designs are attractive and well designed and they are not priced out of the range of the average collector. Just yesterday I received in the mail the latest coin I ordered from the Midnight Mint and Daniel did not disappoint me: This metal was made from a refurbished press from the Denver Mint and doesn't have all the bells and whistles that the latest presses the U.S. Mint has, yet I think it outdoes anything they've put out in the last few years.
I could close the thread, after the high number of reports for hissy-fits from both sides. But I won't , but I am warning that continuation of this line of posting will result in more free time at home to admire or detest the tokens. No insults, no 'Selling', no advertising, etc. You can talk good or bad about the Token, but leave personalities, legalities, or pricing, etc. out of it. Yes, the mean old mods of CT are at it again Jim
Gee, thanks for the correction. It's really great how someone can ignore the content of a post and just look for a mistake and post a one line correction of a misspeaking in the post. Of course I know it's the Moonlight Mint (should use capital letters), I've been buying from it for quite some time. While I'm in this mood, how about those of you who are obviously attorneys and chemists to start a thread that deals with legal or chemical aspects of coins and leave a post titled "Latest Daniel Carr restrike just arrived", to discussing Daniel's latest medals and restrikes? I also received his restrike of the Liberty Standing Quarter:
Don't you see how certain members, (2 in particular, in this case), sabotaged the thread on page 1 by turning it into a discussion on profits instead of aesthetics? That's all they do these days: "Guarantee" and promote their King's products. They don't seem to be able to appreciate. Only speculate.
This is a good idea from Books. And since a lot of the fans have him on ignore, I'll quote him in hopes that they and Dan Carr himself sees it. Regarding the need some members feel to constantly promote DC products: "Instead of having shill promotions, why not simply pay Peter for the privilege of advertising here? Word still gets out, the forum would benefit financially, and there almost certainly (out of respect to Peter) be less arguing. Seems like a win-win to me..."
One of the biggest problems facing coin collecting today is the lack of replacements for baby boomers who are passing away. (I'm a baby boomer and have lost a lot of good friends both in and out of the hobby). When I go to club meetings, the majority of members have grey or no hair, we try with a YN section of the club, but it's just not enough. The same problem, with a different cause, happens to different coin forums. I belong to a few and some are doing well and some are dying a slow death. People who have been a member of a forum for a number of years tend to become comfortable with each other and post to and respond to their own little cliques posts. They either ignore or ridicule a new members posts and questions. When I first joined this forum (I consider it one of the better ones) My posts were either ignored or made light of. Do you know what happened? I started to receive PMs from people saying they had the same problem and wish people would be more receptive of new members. I know that it can be tedious for someone who has been a member for some time to see the same question that was answered two years ago asked again, but to a new member they weren't here two years ago to see that question and it's answer. As a retired educator I'm a strong believer that our hobby has to have an educational aspect. This forum has many goals, but I believe an important one is to educate it's members. For example, how many people know that the U.S. Mint put the "P" mintmark on the Lincoln Cent this year. They did it to celebrate the 225th anniversary year of the mint and purposely did not announce they were going to do it. It's a one year thing, so it might be a good idea to pick up a few rolls of 2017 cents with the "P" mintmark. I live west of the Mississippi so we tend to only get Denver mintmarks here. My brother who lives in the Northeast, picked up five rolls for me from his local bank. This tread is about "Latest Daniel Carr restrike just arrived", and I expected to read posts about that topic. I also expected people to post their Daniel Carr restrikes and metals, so I'd know what's new. I'm not trying to stop people from posting what they want to post, but they really should stay with the topic and start a new thread if they want to discuss something else. End of my Sunday Sermon.
I generally agree. But one thing I'd like to clarify. I do sign my work when it is my original design. I use either a simple "DC" (sometimes with the "C" in the shape of a crescent moon). Or other times I use a stylized "DC" in a circle (like this, to the right of the owl's legs):
Maybe I'm oversimplifying things Dan, but you could shut a lot of you detractors up if you used 'DC' on everything.
