Well @SensibleSal66 . Now that the auction is over I can reveal that there really is a coin that is rotated in the holder. i won this 1905-O Micro O Good 4 Barber dime in old Anac holder last night. This is one of more than a dozen baber varieties on my hit list (Plus is in old Sm Wht Holder). My research indicates that the 05 micro "O" is more of a popularity contest winner than a sreiously hard to find coin. For that reason I was more than happy to settle for a humble Good-4. It is in my preferred holder. It only cost me $50 + $29 juice. It gives me a Good-4 grade coin and i always try to build a grading set within any date type set i build. Now I just have to find out if the advice is right and I can finally get some use out of that cordless screwdriver (AKA electric toothbrush) the little girls at the Mankato Dental School brow beat me into getting. James
ANACS not ANAC. The coin in the holder is held by friction (people decided they didn't like the little dentil grabbing nubs). And thus can rotate. You can probably get it to rotate back if you gently tap it on the edge for a few hours. Or rotate you head and enjoy the coin as is .
I can't find the advice portion back but do have a question. how do you secure the coin. Will a C-Clamp do? Anyone tried it? james
Wrap it in some masking tape and adhere it to the inside of an automatic watch winder and wait for it to align.
True, but that's the way the hobby is. PCGS calls it "the only major variety of the series." By "major" they mean it got published early on and thus "made all the more popular." As a blunder by an employee in selecting the wrong mint mark punch, it's interesting to collectors. To me a bigger blunder is selecting the wrong outdated hub to make the entire die, as is the case with the 1901-O Obverse 1. Let us know how the vibrating toothbrush thing works out. I've seen many posting the tip but can't recall anyone posting about how they actually did it and the results. I've done it by tapping 2x2s but they're a lot looser in there.
You have to be careful that you don't make a "new variety" by vibrating that thing around. You could just submit it for re-holdering. Bruce
That is one reason Im' avoiding trying to tap the edge of the coin repeatedly. Old plastic gets brittle and I have no wish to crack the holder. James
