The Morgan dollar in the pics below is coming up for auction at Great Collections in a couple of weekends. The yellow ring in the middle which secures the coin from rattling or rotating is unusual. I’m assuming that it was originally colorless but reacted to light or maybe an unusual atmosphere and turned yellow. According to the PCGS website, a few of these slabs were made with green rings, but I’ve never seen one. Mike
I like it! Looks like a color I know. "Grabber green". I'll have to check mine but i believe it's supposed to be clear, no? Shouldn't affect value.
I once read something about this. There is something in there which is clear but turns this color when exposed to sunlight if I remember correctly.
Yes, I believe this was the case. I've seen pics of one or two like this. It is not common, but this is not the first one I've seen, either. I have mixed feelings about it. On one level, I find it kind of distracting, but on the other hand, it's kind of interesting, too. I suppose it could grow on me. As long as it's not harming the coin, I'd probably keep it in the OGH, with the trippy insert and all. As an added curiosity. It's kinda pretty.
