Today (January 14th) would have marked the 115th birthday of my paternal grandmother, Jean Norton Shinnick (1911-1980). She was a talented painter and a wonderful grandmother. In her honor, here are two coins from her birthyear. Got any 1911 coins to post? Share 'em!
Here is a portrait Grammy painted of me in 1968, when I was not quite three years old. I swear I remember sitting for it, in my wooden highchair, though perhaps I’m confusing that with a later sitting. I do remember being told to sit still. She worked in watercolors a lot, but this is an oil painting, of course.
Here’s my $2.50 Gold $2.50 1911-D, weak D variety. Happy birthday to her! My grandfather was a young boy during the Civil War.
