Most interesting deteriorated dies actually look like the die is about to fail. I present to you an 1839O Reeded Edge half in terminal die state. Die cracks abound... this die was literally about to fall apart. Notice how the lettering is split, different parts are at different heights. The fields have different depths because the die is literally splintering apart.
On Smooters coin that is PMD, the devices are recessed. Thats looks like an RIDB retained interior die break. Reminds me of this Lincoln. Check out the circular break connecting the stars on this 1818 PCGS MS62 BN cent I once owned (which likely came from the 1869 Randall Hoard found in a keg under a railroad platform in Georgia). Crazy crackage, huh? I miss this piece. It had lots of original red left for a BN coin.
