i have a 1982 greece gold and olympic coin set containing 3 500 drachmas and 3 250 drachmas gold coins. is this worth anything?
Definitely worth something. Are you sure your coins are gold? I don't see gold coins of that denomination and year in the price guide. But silver 500 drachmai are almost 1 ounce of silver each, and the 250 drachmai silver is .41 oz. each. Plus rarer Greek coins usually command a premium. Your pictures do look like they have gold coins but I can't see it well enough to see what you have.
It looks like the gold coins are 5000 drachmai. They have .36 oz of gold each, so they're quite valuable. 2500 drachmai has half the gold of the 5000.
Here's a Craigslist ad showing the same kind of set. If it's true (and it looks legit to me), this set has 1.65 troy ounces of gold and 4.24 troy ounces of silver, worth a total of $2150 or so. Don't know if there's any numismatic premium that would make them worth more than that, but that's certainly "something" in my book! Edit: Good golly, someone just sold one of these sets for $1175 BIN on eBay! Sure wish I'd seen that one in time myself...
It's hard to say because sets like this don't come up for sale very often. I focused on Greek coins a few years ago and I found that the special low mintage sets usually attracted a lot of interest, but I was never buying anything like this so it's hard to know if the same is true for this.
know any website that has the mintages for these coins? nvm, i just googled it. kinda high mintage at 75k
