Some of you will be aware of my obsession with the L Papius Griffon serratus and the various symbol pairings therein.

I could have dragged up the old thread where I have shared lots of them but I could imagine many of you shivering at the thought...

Anyway. My search continues slowly and at my own pace and within my own budget constraints. Here is my latest addition. (Still no dog type here Steve!)

    L. Papius, Denarius Serratus
Obv:–Head of Juno Sospita right, wearing goat skin tied under chin. Behind head, base of column.
Rev:– Gryphon running right; in ex., L. PAPI.; in field, corinthian capital
    Minted in Rome from . B.C. 79.

For comparison here is an example from the same die pair from the BM to see what my Gryphon should have looked like. It is 3.76 gms.

Nice Martin. I have to get me one of these. The only one I had turned out to be fake as you may recall.

Nice, still need a serrated coin for my collection. I find the scoop on the reverse to be pretty interesting.

    Nice coin @maridvnvm !
I think of you (and your plumb bob / level coin) when I see these in an auction. This one went for the minimum today. I might have bid on it but I spent my $ elsewhere. Also it is Ugly. Someone attempted to pierce the coin with no luck.

The symbols on yours are quite interesting. Not that I've spent a ton of time studying this issue but I don't recall having seen another example of that particular symbol pair. My only example of this moneyer bears symbol pair 73 as cataloged by Crawford. The seller called mine "unknown symbols" but most sources call this pair a "mace" and a "club with strap".

I love the vast variety of symbols on this issue. However, I'm not about to start collecting them... the last thing I need is another side collection/distraction! I love the OP and all the ones shown so far. My only one is a die-brother to Steve's coin.

I will wait patiently for my opportunity to add both symbol pairs above to my collection. It may be a long wait.
