Will admit there's coins I've submitted to ANACS for sentimental reasons, and some just for ease of preservation/storage, regardless of the value of the coins. The 1986-S Statue of Liberty half dollar I have graded certainly wasn't worth the grading fee, but it's a coin I've owned since it was minted and part of when I had just started my interest in coin collecting, so it was worth it for that reason.
This just arrived today: Somehow even though I have made it a point to try to get every baseball related US coin, I only recently learned this one even existed. Probably because I tend not to immediately associate the Olympics with baseball. (Still need the 1992 Olympic baseball silver dollar, and the 1997 Jackie Robinson silver dollar, then I'll officially have all US, non-gold, baseball related commemorative coins.) P.S. US modern commemorative half dollars are surprisingly cheap in the secondary market; I should check if there's any others I want for my collection.
I saw this today at a coin shop, didn't have one of this date year, it was a decent coin, relatively inexpensive, so I thought why not? So I did.
Nice toned 1940-D Jefferson Nickel with hammered steps. Ebay lot was under $50, came out to about a dollar a coin (with some decent Buffaloes.) Has some little spots but I like the coin overall.
That's depressing! I have a PR69 1964 Kennedy and definitely want to sell it for more than $41. $141 sounds a lot better to me. Congrats on the nice pick-up for peanuts! $41 is only $10 over bullion now.
Sorry that I took so long to respond. The coin is an 1798/7 16 stars reverse dime. They are difficult to count in this photo, but there are definitely 16 stars on the reverse. Therefore, it's the third oldest dated dime after the 1796 and 1797, and the 16-stars reverse and the scarcer 13 stars reverse have a combined mintage of only 27,550. How many were made into a love token? This one is likely unique in that regard. Love tokens aren't my thing, so I sold it to someone I found to be very interesting and entertaining on coin message boards. They were passionate about love tokens as well as a half dozen other aspects of coin and exonumia collecting. When I posted the coin on the CU forums many years ago, they wrote a long post detailing love tokens and the coins possible worth and then awarded me with a "You suck!" for the find. I was new to coin message boards back then and remembered their enthusiastic response to the love token when I decided to sell it. So, I had some fun with them, told them to put $1 or $2 in an envelope and send it to me without an explanation except for implying they would receive something in the mail. They actually started a thread here describing the "drama" and revealing the mystery purchase after giving the board hints as to what it was. The response was well worth passing this amazing junk box find on to this person at cost.
From the mint, who knew they had anything under $50. I purchased this for the Florida and Texas coins, I do like the design.
