Rare yes, 6 nummi no. Those are marked by an S. Mine is definitely a follis, closest I've found so far. I will need to spend some time in the library.

Here's one I picked up a year or so ago from a FAC free auction:

Av. bust of king Shapur III. right
Rv. fire altar between two attendants; weight is 3.60gr., Gbl 126

Great stuff guys. I've never heard of the Sassanian 6 nummi coin before, definitely something I'll try to keep an eye out for.

It's not Sassanian but Byzantine and fairly common.

Read it wrong, thought it was implied there was both a normal Byzantine 6 nummi type (which I'm familiar with) and also an occupation version of it.

Well Jango, if you're still asking for examples, then I'll try to look around for a few of my coin-stragglers ...

Very nice, @stevex6. Sweet countermarks, and I've always loved the Maurice Antiochs - nice example. A darn sight better than the sorry excuses produced at Nicomedia:

Thanks, Sev-Alex ... but at least your Maurice example has a snout!

I thought there are 6 and 3 nummi pieces, and this is my source: Robert Göbl's book about Sasanian numismatics. In the Xusro II table you may find the 12 nummi like this, and the 6 and 3 mentioned in the lowest field. Sorry it is in German, but Göbl says that there is a 6 nummi with letter S (BMC Byz. I/XXVII/1) and a 3 nummi with letter Gamma, that he knows from a private collection, but it hasn't been published at that moment (the book is from 1968).

That Shapur I tetradrachm is very interesting and in good shape, with many details!

Thank you. I was attracted to this one because I do not see many broze issues from the Sassanids, and that it had good details. Everyone else posts AR, I thought I would get a bronze. Besides, he was the only one who captured a Roman Emperor!

That is indeed an impressive bronze, you don't see them very often, especially like that. And yes, Shapur is cool. My drachm sports my favourite Sassanid portrait:

Good grief, what a coin. You are doing it again, panzerman. If I had the patience to buy only one coin a year - but no, that will never work.

Thanks! I bought that coin end of 2015/ I was broke! I had spent all of my "coin $" on 25 AV coins that year. So when the auction was live, I could not resist to bid on it. Long story short....I phoned up a collector friend in Toronto, and asked him if he could come over and buy some butterflies. He ended up buying 15K worth, so I could pay for the coin, plus has 3K left over for upcoming auctions:happy: Good to have my butterfly/moth collection in reserve, when I get into financial trouble:(
