The Product of an Idle Hour...Acetone, a Rose Thorn and Verdi Care and an Antoninus Sestertius

    Besides the occasional use of acetone, I have never really been much of a coin cleaner.

    Here is, however, a sestertius which I really thought could use some cleaning: the bright green deposits obscured much of the little reading obverse detail. Not nice.

    Here are the 'before' pictures:

    And here the 'after' pictures:

    After rinsing with water, followed by 2 brief acetone dips, then picking at the remaining deposits with a rose thorn; and finally, localized 6-10 minute application of a few drops of Verdi-care.

    I daresay I like the 'after' better:

    it may have saved it from further deterioration, i know when i clean mine they always look better to me.

    That looks great, Eduard. I like that you left some of the deposits on the reverse to highlight the detail. Well done!

    Thank you, John Anthony. You are absolutely right, I left some of the deposits on the reverse on purpose to better highlight the detail.
    All in all I think it was an improvement.

    Ken Dorney Yea, I'm Cool That Way...

    Honestly I like it before. I really do like a natural patina that highlights the details which is often lost with cleaning. But, to each his own. It is still a nice coin!
