1979 penny, DD ?

    Mike.. flat and Shelflike is always worthless doubling.
    That's not a Doubled Die variety unfortunately.

    Yes, MD is caused by the good die being a little loose in the chuck or holder. Once it's tightened back down, you get good impressions. It always leaves a flat, shelf-like shadow impression and maybe 1/2 the height of the full impression. It is one of the 3-4 types of doubling that is worthless doubling. The die, itself, is good and sharp, but the die moves, rotating very slightly, as the die rises from the strike, leaving a shadow or mirror image adjacent to the full strike.
