Thanks, I'll read that, since I'm not up to speed on my ancient Sicilian democracies.

I do have a coin from the Second Democracy:

Greece (Sicily, Syracuse): ca. 470-450 BC silver litra of the Second Democracy

NGC Ch VF; Strike 5/5, Surface 3/5. Cert #6828625-001.

Ex-Classical Numismatic Group eAuction 546, Lot 34, 13 September 2013. Purchased raw. Prior provenance below.

    CNG description:

"SICILY, Syracuse. Second Democracy. 466-405 BC. AR Litra (12mm, 0.62 g, 10h). Struck circa 460-450 BC. Head of Arethousa right, wearing pearl tainia / Octopus. Boehringer Series XIIIa, 415–422 var. (unlisted dies); HGC 2, 1375. Old cabinet tone. VF.

    Ex Stack’s (5 August 2020), lot 22017, hammer $440; Spink 325 (21 June 2016), lot 84."

Y'know, if you put a gun to my head and told me I could only collect ancient coins from one particular region (excluding Rome), I would have to go with Sicily.

yes - there is no doubt that the larger silver coins especially can be quite dramatic - I have yet to won one - regret not buying 10 years ago when they were much more accessible.

A funny note about the second democracy - it really was the first democracy in Syracuse - I don't know who first assigned the numbering.
