They made this in business strike and proofs. I am assuming the rim is not a proof rim. Nice coin. When I find something like this I have to assume it was just purged from someones collection, as any time in circulation will mar it.
Finding these and many early 40's, including silver nickels, usually indicates an economic situation that has people dumping their piggy banks. After WWII there were many nice coins in circulation. I found most of my early commemorative halves in the early to mid 50's. Down economic situations usually bring good findings. Finding 6 silver nickels and 1 1942 regular composition in 2 months makes for a good CRH.
Hmmm…maybe I should get a box with that in mind. I did notice that about the holidays and for a couple of months after, pickings were better. Dumping change to buy gifts or pay the cards off.
