Definitely exposed to some corrosive material. The spike in Washington's head was probably struck with a screw driver or chisel. Interesting coin. Bruce
Looks like acid. Not a die gouge. That was something that happened post mint. A die crack will be raised. Because of the crack in the die, when the coin is pressed with all the pressure the metal will "flow" into the recessed area of the die crack and the coin will have a raised line where the crack is. (In my very limited understanding of this process.)
The groove in the coin at 11 o’clock might be a lamination but the acid has destroyed the coin and I can’t tell from a photo.
