I guess - but there are always externalities in any transaction. If you're paying cash, somebody has to pay to haul that cash around, never mind the cost of minting or printing it in the first place.

It seems to me that moving digital bits around should almost always be cheaper and more efficient than moving physical tokens or stores of value. Of course, the two have different failure modes (being hacked vs. being robbed/burgled, etc). And if the electronic clearinghouses don't have meaningful competition, they can seek rent as they please.

The saga concludes; the self checkout stations have been taught that it's OK to round change to the nickel, and are now doing so.

Distribution is uneven to be sure. Around here (ironically quite close to the Denver Mint) they're getting pretty scarce.

    100% on point.
I live 20-25 miles from West Point. I've never gotten a single 'W' quarter in circulation.

I'm ~60 miles from the Denver mint and it's always around May before I see any current year coins in change. This year I think I've only seen one 2025 quarter and none of the other denominations. When I roll up my piggy banks I'll check again, but this year has been weird.

I'd be surprised if this was true in regards to calculating/rounding sales tax amounts.

Yeah, and I wonder what actual laws there are around fractional-cent rounding.

I'm sure merchants are on the hook for remitting accurate aggregate taxes collected, but I doubt that the state wants a transaction-by-transaction report. Might need to present those for an audit, though.

Well…I live 1,087.15 miles (as the crow flies) from the West Point Mint, and I have not ever found a “W” mint mark coin. As a matter of fact, I have also never seen one that wasn’t a photograph nor held one in my hand.

I’m unsure if these astounding facts mean anything one way or another. It may only underscore just how difficult they are to find out of circulation. But that doesn’t mean they are a critical coin for one’s collection nor does it reflect on the coin’s desirability towards a collection.

If you want one for a collection they can be acquired fairly easily but common sense dictates one should not expect to find one from circulation. I suppose a rabid collector could spend all his time coin hunting for them out of circulation but they wouldn’t have any kind of normal life…imo.

So, I am rabid and abnormal? I'll take it, been called worse:)

My understanding of the distribution of the 2mm of each W mint mark variety was that 1mm were mixed in with business strikes from both the Philadelphia and Denver mints, so being near West Point would not be any kind of an advantage in finding one.

We just picked up some rolls. 41 looks. 0-41.
I've got 12. (some doubles) 3 from each year. I need Amer Mem Park and River of No Return and in 2020 I need Weir Farm and Marsh Billings. I haven't found any in circulation (sort of.) 10 from CRH and 2 in the GFs change purse. SHE got 2 from circulation.

My wife commented today that she is making two or three cents whenever she pays cash for something as they round her change up. She gets upset and tells them she wants the cents because she knows I like to look through them.
