Another deterioration question...

    These photos are both of 1971 D coins. On the first photo I noticed a little spike to the right of the dome. I looked at the other coin to compare and realized it was missing boxes on the right and left of the dome. What's weird is how clean it is besides that little spike on the right. Would a deteriorated die look so clean?

    1971.. the year I was born. So your Nickel is 46 mint years old
    I can think of 1 thing to make that missing area look the way it does.
    Die over polishing.. Nothing to do with Die Deterioration. IMHO
