I'm a hoarder. Whenever I get some pocket change, I give it a quick once over and then stash it somewhere for a closer look later. My closet, my car, office, basement, shop, or any other convenient spot will do. Eventually I get to the point where I need to clear out all the loose change everywhere. I never expect to find anything rare, but I can plug holes in my circulated albums and folders and I get to feel like I'm still a coin collector without the pain to the wallet. So I'm sorting all the pennies*, and I soon notice I have a pile of 2017-P Zincolns - with a "P" mintmark - so I look it up and .. oh yeah! 2017 commemorated the anniversary of the Philadelphia Mint, and they gave Lincoln a mint mark. So if they're valuable collectible commemoratives, I'm on easy street! Sorry for the long post, I've be sorting change for hours and I'm a little buggy.... *yeah, I called them pennies
Generally hoarding is a bad thing, but when it comes to coins it's an admirable trait. Congratulations ! Bruce
Bear in mind that the Philadelphia mint produced 4,361,220,000 of the 2017-P cents. Yes, over 4.3 billion. People are hoarding them. I have several boxes of rolled coins myself, over $50 in this date. edited to correct spelling check.
Yes the sad truth is that they aren't insanely valuable. The joke is that I forgot they even existed.
With so many kids, grandkids and great grandkids I have always put back extras for them if they decide to collect.
…and because they made 4.3 billion of them, I saved only 1 roll. My wife got them from the bank, I installed them in flips and divided them between my 2 sons who have them now.
My friend Terry Granstaff (@asheland) was one of the first to publicly discover these when he got one in change.
I recall they initially released them, not telling anyone about them beforehand... and it resulted in a large volume of calls from people wondering if they were an error, or counterfeit lol. Eventually they did put out a press release to let people know they did it on purpose (for the sake of marking the 225th anniversary of the Philadelphia Mint). They're not particularly rare... they minted about 3.6 billion of them (according to Red Book, but no reason to doubt this figure, but I've seen a lot of people thinking it was more than this). But you don't see them often I suppose, and with the discontinuation of the penny assembling them in quantity is bound to be worth something. Starting in 1980 Philadelphia put the "P" mintmark on all the coins they minted, the cent being the exception... 2017-P is the one exception to the exception lol.
it all happened kind of by chance, I found the penny in change and made a thread on the PCGS forums, that led to a p.m. from the guy at coin world… here’s that original thread: https://forums.collectors.com/discussion/974580/2017-coins-already-circulating
