..with a metal detector that is...This Church lot was a great spot for me last summer. Found some great coins there. Just outta the picture next to the church lot is an old school as well. Lots of traffic over the years. Funny thing is while I was detecting there the guy who mows the grass for the church told me many people have been there over the years with detectors. Can't even imagine what others found there because I found some real good oldies there. Jim
So...... You say you found good oldies. What did you find? Or do you just like keeping us in suspense?
This was last year. The best were.. A 1915 Barber Half, 1866 2 center, two seated dimes, a 1864 L Indian head cent, two 1861 Indian heads. A nice 1868 Indian head. Plus wheaties and moderns. Was just a fun time being at such a neat old looking spot pulling out old coins. Wondering who may have dropped them and how hard (if at all) they tried to look for their money. Jim

Jim, I have a detector that hasn't gotten much use yet. I know of alot of old churches out in the middle of nowhere that look kinda like that one. How do you go about getting permission to detect somewhere like that?
Adam: There are two ways: 1) watch for the lawn maintenance folks and ask the; or 2) ring the door bell and ask the pastor.
I always use the phone. Find the church name, check the phone book. Call the pastor. They are always friendly (hope so). Just tell em that you won't hurt the property, which you won't if you cover your holes properly. And if you find anything relating to the church you will glady give it to them. I have yet to be turned down at a church lot. Plus by using the phone you can rehearse what your gonna say before calling. Easier than face to face. Jim

Few other places to check out with your detectors are Cross roads especialy if they are in a farming comunity, same as drovers trails and fair grounds Look for sites of old coaching inns If you are looking for a nice easy to use cheap machine you could allways try a BlackKnight Good luck & good hunting
I use a minelab explorer 2. Would not use any other. Stared with a whites qxt. If I were you I would start with nice mid range detector just to make sure detecting is really what ya wanna do. You could find a nice one for a few hundred dollars on e-bay. Any top name model will work fine for you. Whites, Fisher, Tesero, etc. Whites would be my suggestion. Get one that shows the depth of the target. That helps alot when your first starting out. It can be frustrating at first. I thought I was gonna go right out and start finding old coins left and right. All I dug was junk targets that the detector was saying were coins. About 30hrs on a detector and you'll know what its telling ya. Its all in the sound. My two cents, Jim
