I have been buying MS 65 and MS 66 PCGS graded Presidential dollars. MS 67's are very scarce and expensive. My question is : when the mint sets are released do you think this will bring the prices of the 65 -67 down because the coins in the mint sets should grade higher and there should be a lot of 67 - 68's? Or am I wrong in thinking this way? The ones I have are designated first day of issue. Would coins broken from a mint set not get this designation or is the appearance different from a regular business strike. I guess to make a long story short I dion't want to pay premium prices for coins that when the mint sets are released the price will crash.

I think this whole series is way too hyped and will come crashing down

First Day of Issue; First Strikes: Early Releases! These are all terms that are basiclly meaningless, I would stay away from any of these issues. Any of these could have been struck a couple of weeks earlier and with dies that werent fresh anyway! Dies are changed many times and you can get a so called "First Strike" coin at any time later!!

The coins in the mint sets are Proof, the others are Business strikes......

If the coins in the mint sets are proof then what are the coins in the proof sets?

Correct, because the coins in the mint sets have a different finish than the business strikes. So there will be no gems from the Mint sets to compete with the higher grade business strikes.

It used to be you only had 2 classes of coins - Proof and business strikes. The coins in the annual mint sets might be of a higher quality but they had the same finish as the business strikes. So you could not tell one from the other once the coins were removed from the mint sets. That is no longer true. So now there are 3 classes of coins - Proof, Specimen and business strike.

Thank you, thank you, thank you etc.!

The Mint is so busy hyping everything they come up with along with help from the "numismatic ignorant" media that I rarely buy ANYTHING from the mint these days.

As for Mint Sets offering high grade coins what I've seen over the past several years is no better than getting shotgun roll. It's just in a mint holder.

If a person collects them because they like them that's cool. I wouldn't waste a dime going for the high grade slabbed stuff. I prefer older stuff that has stood the test of time.

The presidential dollar coins are using the same planchets as the Sacajawea are. I would assume in the mint sets the Sacajawea and the Presidents would have the same Satin Finish so to answer the original question the mint sets should not affect the prices of the regular releases.

I think the mints sets will be graded as Satin Finish for both the Presidents and the Sacajawea.
