Look at this reverse. Fake, counterfeit coin? The reverse die is all wrong for this coin (see feathers) It's a listing, not mine. I don't believe 78S had the reverse of 79 on any strikes.
Definitely fake. It's hard to point to anything in particular. There are many small things that don't look right and I'm sure there are others that I'm picking up that I don't fully realize. What stands out the most to me is the surfaces and the rims. The fields aren't exactly lustrous or cleaned. The rims have what I call the "waterfall" and "double rim" look. The "Double Rim" is visible on the reverse from 11 to 1 o'clock. The "Waterfall" is on the obverse at 2 o'clock. Here's one of mine with "waterfall" rims. (Counterfeit) This one has "double rims".
I should have been more clear, arrow feathers, not tail. Crazy how they're counterfeiting even common date, low value coins. You are probably wondering why I even noticed this coin. I've been scouring around for long nocked 78S's. They are for sure as scarce as hen's teeth. This isn't one of them, but you have to sift through 1000's to find one. I did find one today for $100 bucks but it's in AG03 condition at best. I'll pass.
Did you weigh it, try a magnet test. The tests you did do is enough though. Thanks for the show-n-tell and sharing your thoughts on this c--p coin.
Not sure who you are replying to? I did not buy this coin I posted. If replying to me, read again. I believe the counterfeiters outsmarted themselves with the wrong reverse.
I wouldn't touch that coin with a ten foot pole. Seller's photos. This is the only reverse I've ever seen on a 1878S below. The top arrow feather is sleek and not slanted. That's why I believe it to be fake.
