Coin Holders

I am thinking of standardizing on one type of coin holder for my better coins. I have seen the different types of Air-Tites offered and have quite a few already. What I'm not too sure about is which is better/preferred.

• Air Tite Holders with rings
  • Black
  • White
• Air Tite Direct fits
• Others

I have not looked at the other options so I would be interested to hear those as well. I am on a budget, so I cannot go nuts on expense but realize I need something better than cardboard 2x2's.

I would also love to know why you like the type you have selected and why you think its better than the other options.

One of the things that has me wondering is some claims about the negative toning affects of some black rings on silver coins.

BTW - most of mine are black ring type but I am thinking about switching to direct fit holders.

Actually most of my stuff still goes into a 2X2. Easy and cheap and been around forever.
I still see tons of nice coins in them at shows etc.

If I really like a coin I'll get a Capital holder for it. Or, in the case of my number 1 Two Cent collection, a custom Capital holder.

Should probably get more into the airtites but like I said 2x2s have worked for years.

I always worry that I will end up scratching the coins when they are in 2x2's. I use a ton of them too for my circulated foreign coins and old US Coins like Liberty Nickels in lower grades. I like how they store in binder sheets but usually I stick to air tites for everything else. I figure if I've spent $5 or more on a coin, it probably deserves a little added protection. My developing issue is how to store them. The stacks are getting a little unruly.

That's where the 2x2 boxes come in handy. You can store a lot of coins in a small space. Just make sure you put them in there right and avoid staple scratches.

Been doing it for over 30 years without a problem.

Been collecting for well over 60 years. All coins are in either a Whitman Album or 2x2's. Always have been and always will be. Nothing has effected any coins in all these years so why start something new.

 

I like the black ring airtites for better coins. The color is just a personal preference. I don't like the way the direct fit airtites touch the edges of the coins.

 

I use 2x2's mosly, but i will put nice ones in air-tights.

 

Mind if I ask what you do use?

 

I use 2X2's for all my coins. Most of my coins are in Whitman folders. I do have a Maryland state quarter that is UNC in an air tight, I got it for free from some magazine.

 

Where do you recommend to buy them from?

I store all of my "extra" coins in 2x2s, coins that I dont have enough of yet to justify buying an album. All of the rest have their own spot in my Whitman Classic albums. Except for various key dates which are buried in a 3 foot hole on Lookout Mountain, Colorado...lol

 

I also prefer the cardboard 2x2's. I use the right size per coin and have never had an issue with scratching.
The vinal pages that they go into are sometimes a worry as the pockets loosen up a bit over time and the 2x2's can slip out of the top row.

 

I use them also. JP's is so fast that sometimes the order arrives before I put it in the mail.
