#232 imma take a loan out to try to buy one... https://auctions.stacksbowers.com/l...-circulating-cents-set-number-232-of-232-pcgs
Pretty sure he's strict about not changing face value, and not striking non-coin bullion with coin features (both of which are certainly prosecutable). Witness his Stella restrikes that were struck over half eagle, and showed something like "FOUR DOL. +$1" on the reverse. I guess he could produce very thin gold cents by restriking quarter eagles with "ONE CENT +$2.49", but I kind of hope he doesn't.
If I am spending that sort of cash it better have a date of 1792 and an awkward spelling of dime on it.
The 232 set has the last struck coins, but the Philadelphia has a big fingerprint from Treasurer Beach. Makes me laugh.
I'm befuddled. The old adage goes, there's a sucker born every minute. Who knew there were 232 of them? Wow, just wow!
LOL at the MS-64 grade... absolutely covered in fingerprints! You better hope they conserved and stabilized that coin, otherwise it is going to be black and corroded within a year!
I assume the "no care given" to how these were handled at the mint is due to them being "intended for circulation" coins? At the same time, they go through the process and hassle of adding the privy mark, and the special way they are selling/distributing these to public, and yet, its a complete haphazard way they were handled with spots, fingerprints, and overall ugliness??!!! Its almost like they tried to make these ugly. I wouldn't even bid $100 on these potmarked coins... No thanks.
And all from our beloved mint who most times tends to shy away from creating miraculous rarities. Yet here they are, creating just that. What's the purpose? Greed? Are the proceeds from these auctions going to eliminate the national debt? No. They could have easily made them available to the general collecting public, but chose not to do so. Not that it matters to me much because I'm not much of a cent collector. But I know there are many collectors out their who thrive on cents.....especially YN's. To deprive them the chance of completing a collection is dastardly, abysmally small on their part. My respect for them is an all time low. I'll just give them a Felix Unger (FU).....
I consider the 2015 cents necessary to complete a set. If it has any additional items, like a privy mark, that in my opinion, is not necessary.
