My first gold was in 2000, was at the LCS, and the owner showed me the newest AGE he had just received. I had never seen the Saint Gaudens striding Liberty design before and fell in love with it.

I almost bought a small handful of mixed date $5. and $10. gold coins. This was back in the late 1970's and I was working the evening shift at my cousin's Liquor store and a shady looking guy came in and pulled out of his pocket these gold coins and told me he was needing cash and he'd sell me the coins at face value. It was very tempting but I was sure they had been stolen and I didn't want to get in trouble or my cousin's store if the cops picked this guy up. He was definitely not a coin collector

That's the coin version of the fish that got away.

I’m sure you did the right thing. But I can see why you remember it.

My first gold coin was a ring my former girlfriend gave me back in 1989 for Christmas. I do not know what denomination it was. An inlaw "outlaw" in the family is suspected of stealing that ring, it stayed on my dresser for years, needed repairs, the ring itself broke in half. It was a small denomination St Gauden's design. Fast forward to about 3 years ago, inherited a pile of English sovereigns. Sadly, even on the World Coins forum, not many people know them well. Lord Marcovan you are a kind and generous member, I don't participate in any free gifts contests for these reasons.
