I have a question about authenticating a 1879 (yr 12) 1 yen from Japan. I have had it in my collection for years along with a yr 37 50 sen. I am not sure on the authenticity of the 1 yen. Some who have looked at it have said yes, and some no. Hypothetically if I send this coin to be graded and they deem it fake, will it be sent back to me? Or will it be kept by them and I will just get a letter or something saying, sorry, it was a fake?

Thanks for that. I have over 1,300 silver foreign coins, but it is the only one I question. If it is indeed authentic it has some value.

They return the coin in case you want to return the coin to the dealer you bought it from.

They will still charge you, but it will be returned in the Infamous body bag coin flip, also without reason.

Yep, other than label on the body bag, they don't explain the WHY. That irritates me. We paid for the grading, they owe at least a short explanation how they arrived at their conclusion.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

They will tell you it is questionable authenticity or that it is straight-up counterfeit. I agree that some more info would be helpful...

NGC returned a no grade to me and the reason was on the label, plated.
Now I do think for other things, they don't really give you any pointers on why something was fake.

Unless it's a very valuable coin they really won't spend a lot of time on authentication and if it won't straight grade they will spend even less time. These companies are in the business of "grading" first with authentication a distant second in most cases. If you get one slabbed, think of it more like insurance on the value of your coin vs. proof of authenticity. Also remember, if you successfully challenge the authenticity of a slabbed coin, it's the TPG that will determine the value that is reimbursed--not the cost that you paid to acquire it.

Cheap education for counterfeiters if you provide more information.
