I just bought my first colonial coin, a 1773 Virginia No Period Half Penny. After talking to some of the folks at the coin shop, they thought buying a Fugio is a great addition to a US collection. I have been looking at ebay just to get an idea. Do any of you have Fugios and if so, do you have any suggestions searching for one?
the fugio is really the kick off for modernization of coinage it was a wide order for the new world i owned one in ms 62 http://www.pcgs.com/cert/28944527
i would look into geting a cinq 4 not a new haven restrike which you can get , they are still nice but are not originial
Iwould take a look at CRO. http://www.coinraritiesonline.com/ John Agre only sells high quality examples without problems. He has 6 for sale on his site now. I have a few Fugios, there are a bunch of cool varieties, interesting die clashes, and so on. And a great design that traces back to Ben Franklin.
shop around ,search ebay , do not get a new haven , if you do you should pay no more then 700 for it there not original and a lot of dealers might say its worth the same, research the coin heaviliy to tell the difference
The examples for sale at CRO are high quality, on good planchets, for the most part with full strikes and good centering . They are choice, and one generally has to pay up for quality. There is no shortage of Fugios, but the nice ones are not always easy to find.
Fugio's are exciting. FYI - Fugio's in MS-64 are down in value 21% going back 8-10 years. I think it has hit bottom for the nicer coins (good strike, nice color, good centering, clean). I just picked up a super 64 from the Goldberg's auction this past Monday. I'm a real cherrypicker for my portfolio coins. Good luck.....once you have one.....you will not be disappointed. Beauty - History - and Extremely nice to hold and look at.
