I seem to do well on the Seated Half Dimes and took a shot on this one. It looks nicer than any of the other ones I've seen listed, it'll be heading into NGC next week with my order. I'll have better pics when I get it either tomorrow or Saturday, but this will have to do for now. I'm guessing as long as it has no cleaning issues, a AU55 or 58? What do you think?
It looks as if it has been cleaned, at least dipped. Not being able to see the surfaces and not knowing if the dark areas are tone or some sort of gunk makes it hard to tell. Yes a better date,and mm. Tomorrow I will grab my half dime book and try and attribution on it .As a half dime collector I'm in the Xf - Au 50 range.
I think they scrubbed a little behind her ear and elsewhere, though not with anything very abrasive. I'd give the old girl a break. AU53-55, I'm thinking. You have to think "money," now, that's what this market grading is about, you can't just go on technical strength or you'll wrong it almost every time...
Very nice half dime. I love it. Will it grade? I don't know. The very dark color near the rims might be a serious case of cleaning and retoning.
If there's a die crack running from the 4 star to the arm on the left....that is a major marker of the ddo 001 . However without having the coin in hand it's to dark to confirm. A V 5
Guys, When a coin has this type of dark color it is not retouched, and it is not cleaned (at least not recently as it takes time for the dark color to develop - unless that is shoe polish). This is either very dark toning, artificial tobacco toning, or dirty crud. If it is raised on the surface it is crud and can be easily removed. Without a more magnified image that's all I can say. Anyone wish to disagree?
Not to Disagree. Even If the toning was Organic based, it could still leave the evidence of its corrosion. I say it is best left untouched. Nice Dime by the way!
I believe this coin to be an example of 1839-o V5. You can find an great example of it on PCGS Coinfacts, it's the coin graded 64+ on the 39-o no drapery page. After looking in my transcribed copy of Valentines book, the closest I can find to it is my description of V5: Obverse: Date High, left star low and close. Die breaks occur at 1st and 4th stars, top of head and from shield (to 8 in date). The last part must be a mistake in the original text, because it sure appears that the break is from base of rock to edge left of the 1. There are also clash marks on the reverse with a medium O slightly left of center.
One problem I have found with half dimes is that there is no text that shows each valentine variety with high definition photos. Valentines descriptions often contain errors, and the other books that specialize in the liberty seated half dime are good in their own rights, but also contain many errors. I believe there should be some more research done on the series, and a reorganization of the numbers to show die progression when known and to sort out some of the problems with the current system. There should also be some effort put into new descriptions of each known die also.
In Valentine book there are up dates to certain dates and varieties in the rear of the book. I called this a V-5 from the start. And most don't know that there's no small o! The difference between the med. o and lg.O o is 1.00mm and 1.2mm in size.
I can be dead wrong about this;but I believe there are decades of information about Seated Half Dimes since Valentine was published. So much so including the Internet that I forgot all about my copy of that book. I'll need to blow the cobwebs from it when I find it. If I remember, there is a website by the president of the Liberty Seated Collectors Club with images. Will someone please confirm this as I am too interested in something else at the moment to check.
HAT TRICK! Little hockey lingo for our northern friends. IMO, your coin has dark toning, crud, and old cleaning. Why bother to have it slabbed as I don't think it will alter its value and perhaps only ID its minor faults.
It is the V-5 DDO-001 however I don't believe it will grade without being details. Old cleaning , and environmental damage. I would call it an xf detail coin. I would value it in the $75 -80 price range even though it is the med O ,and the damage, it's also hard to get a value as none listed lg.or med. O's have any price guides to comp. Vf it's a $58 xf $135.....environmental damages and cleaning somewhere in the middle or what someone who's willing to live with it will pay.
