Don't forget the cushy arrangements with dealers, TPGs and auction houses. Obviously that's been going on for over a hundred years, but lately it's on steroids.

The United States Mint has become monopoly pricing institution. If it were a private business dealing in a product everyone needed, there would be Justice Department investigation. The mint does not care about collectors. It just rips them off.

As for these cents, as a collector, I could be attracted to the "cat nip," but I am so turned off by the way the mint is treating this, I want no part of it. The mint's profits on these coins is going to be far more than any dealer could earn, and that's just plain wrong. The mint is public institution which is supposed to represent the citizens, and it has abandoned that role completely in this instance.

Especially when you look at how much the mint charged for proof sets 120 years ago, basically face value plus postage or something. They've gone a long way down this hole.

There is nothing stopping anyone from making Superman or US Marine Corp medals, or one ounce .999 pure bullion non-denominational medals with Liberty, or eagles, or flags, so no monopoly there.

The only reason they can charge what they do is we (the royal we) continue to pay. I believe that if they had tried selling proof sets at 13.8 x face ($2.91 face for $40.25) 120 years ago they would have been tarred and feathered and run out of town on a rail. Today there are a LOT more buyers, and enough of them are more than willing to pony up. I don't blame them at all and consider them to be the only governmental institution that somewhat lives in the real world.

I know some people enjoy yelling at clouds, but I'm just too tired these days to bother. But I did buy my 2 uncirculated sets and 1 each of the proof and silver proof, so maybe I'm just one of the suckers. However, I stop there; all the rest of it I will wait for the aftermarket to determine the real price and if I want it, I will buy it then.
