I had opened the envelope, was glad I received it, went out for supper and shopping. And freaked when I went home. The open flip was in my pocket... but the coin slipped out. I must had gone into my office to finish something before I went out....

About five years ago I received a very rare type Justin I pentanummium at the Post Office so I opened the envelope and out rolled the little coin. Decided to put it somewhere safe so I dropped it into a small compartment in my center console where it just happened to roll into a small hole which I had never noticed, and then disappear. If you think it's easy to remove the center console in an Infiniti you would be wrong. Well, it's kind of sealed underneath so I'm sure it's safe and sound somewhere in there waiting for me to extricate it someday.

    Does that count?

Out of curiosity, which pentanummium was it?

How? That's a real tragedy. All the lost coins are, but having one stolen is in a class all by itself. How dreadful!!!!!

Not sure of the number but the reverse was an epsilon with cross to rt, with an "N" directly below the cross. A very tough coin to find.

I had a number of Morgan dollars that I was given by my grandmother when I was a kid. About half I put into an album. The loose ones were fine, the album was lost. Probably thrown away when my family moved.

I was living at home after finishing grad school. My mom had a boarder renting a room in the house. He ended up being a thief and stole a number of things from my mom, as well as some coins from me. The coins were mostly 40% and 90% silver half dollars that I had left out with the intention of selling. Fortunately the thief did not take any rare coins, which I had hidden.

My dog nearly cost me a coin recently. He's a puppy still and obsessed with eating everything. Managed to take a coin in a flip off the counter. My wife saw it happen and managed to save it. While the flip was bit, the coin managed to avoid any damage. Would have sucked for it to survive 1200 years in the ground only to be eaten by a dog. Perhaps humorously the coin was of the Anglo-Saxon King "Redwulf", and was nearly devoured by a reddish dog.

I'm not sure if this would count since it never was in my possession, but this coin was lost (stolen?) in the mail at USPS ISC New York, December 2010.

    titus as caesar ephe1lg.jpg
It's a rare Titus Caesar denarius from Ephesus. Luckily, since then I was able to replace it, not once but twice! (The first coin is from the same die pair)

The last coin has an engraver's error in the legend - ending in 'E' instead of the proper 'F'.

    I have NEVER lost a coin....thank GOD!
But, like I said before. Back in 1990's, I got my Triton I auction catalogue. I ended up winning a FDC Trajan Decius and a FDC Severus Alexander aurei. CNG sent the coins.....still waiting:(:(:(:(:(:(:( Problem CNG had listed the contents/ so coins were likely stolen by customs agents. How a registered letter can disappear is unexplainable. That was the only coin shipment that went MIA. Also, CNG kept my $ on account, so when Triton II auction took place, I was able to win a FDC Elagalabus Aureus and a Siscia Mint FDC Constantius II Solidus (2 known) so I came out OK:shame:

Right now, this little Arados diobol is misplaced. Someone saw it on Tantalus and asked to buy it - it's not for sale, but I was unable to find it - hopefully, it's in the SDB.

I think enough time has passed without it showing up that I can include it here as well. My first "pricey" loss:

    Neapolis, Campania

    AR nomos
Obv: Head of nymph right, wearing broad headband, triple-pendant earring, and pearl necklace
Rev: Man-headed bull walking right, head facing; above, Nike flying right, placing wreath on bull's head; NEOΠOΛITΩN in exergue
    Mint: Neapolis
    Date: Mid-late 4th century BC

Some time ago, I purchased this sestertius of Herennia Etruscilla and opened up the envelope in which it was shipped in the mail. I got distracted doing some things and forgot about it for a few days. Then, when I went to look for it, I couldn't find it anywhere. I was heartbroken and assumed it must have come out of my pants pocket at some point in the day and fallen on the ground who-knows-where.

A few years later, when I put on a jacket I hadn't worn in a while, I found the coin in the inside breast pocket. It felt like a gift!

Almost five months now. Stupid local PO somehow lost it after I missed the delivery. Then it was apparently found but USPS then decided to give it a two-month vacation in the New York area, after which it was sent back to the sender. Guess what? Seller never received it. You can probably tell I'm still sore about it, even though I got a good replacement coin for it.

The thought of dropping a coin at the bank (sdb) is the stuff of nightmares.
