Maybe I'm just experiencing a heavy dose of new owner ecstasy? I recently received a 1913 Caballito Peso in the mail, graded by NGC as AU 55, and finally seeing and handling one up close, I think this may qualify as one of the most beautiful coins to grace metal. Who knows, perhaps I'll say the same thing about the next coin I receive, but for now this one has me utterly mesmerized. The photos are slightly dark, as the color of the coin in hand resembles a shiny untarnished Morgan. I have yet to master photographing through slabs.
The art deco age produced some of the nicest coins. I would think that the time period of the mid teens throughout the late 1930's was a time when most all countries produced some of their best works ever! The beading around the rim, the rays.....adding to the focal point to be more majestic , and somewhat embracing the future. Very pretty coin.
Enjoy the coin. I have always liked that coin in high grade but never got one myself. (Whenever I would find a nice one, I couldn't part with the cash required).
It is a beautiful coin, congrats. I'm a bit surprised at the dearth of available quality strikes of this coin though. Maybe I'm not aware of a problem with this issue, or maybe all the best ones have been scooped up already?
Thanks for the comments, everyone! That's the wonderful thing about these little circular objects - there's something for everyone. Not only that, disagreement is a far more beautiful thing than most people realize. Thanks for posting a contrary opinion! It keeps things a little more exciting. I agree, appealing examples seem rare. I waited and waited and waited and waited until a good one at a decent price happened along. Similar to your experience, the ones I had seen up to that point didn't exactly inspire me. When I saw this one I pondered for about 3 seconds before clicking "buy." I think I had waited around 5 years for that moment. It seemed like a freshie, as though the dealer had posted it a half an hour or less prior to my buying it. So consider this one scooped up. Plus, it's only an AU 55 - I can't imagine the gorgeousness of an MS 65. Nor the price...
