A dramatic title for a simple query. The policy of the BoC is to destroy all copies of the $1000 note as has been the case for a few years. I don't do much actual banking anymore so I wondered this; can you possibly find $1000s in local banks prior to being shipped back to be destroyed and if so could you exchange for one? I never bothered back when they were being phased out and you would still see normal Bird series notes such as the $20 still in circulation.

As recently as 2013 I was able to pick up some Scenes series so I wanted to find out what success others have had checking the local branches in their area for old notes.

I haven't seen one since ca. 1997, some fool was showing it off in the casino and asking people to break it for smaller bills.

These pop up regularly on eBay if you're willing to pay a bit of a premium.

I know there is the ebay-premium option but I'm curious if others, akin to coin roll hunting, have found theirs at a bank via the 'old notes" method.

Canna say for Canada but I have managed to eek out 2 $500's and 3 $1000s in the USA. Curiously enough though, I have managed to find older Canadian $1 and $2 notes in foreign exchange - not sure if they came in from Americans or Canadians though.
