I have a couple of coin albums with vinyl pages that hold 2x2 flips. I decided on the albums as a way that I can let family and friends easily view a number of coins. The coins are excess and cost $100 or less each...but I've encountered a problem for which I hope some of you have solutions. After extracting a 2x2 several times, the vinyl pockets stretch out and when the album is held upside down....2x2's come tumbling out. It's as if it were raining money. I've thought about putting a staple at the opening after inserting a coin, but that makes it impractical to pull flips out for better viewing......Any ideas?
I've had that issue before. It is quite common. I'd either get new pages or staple them. Stapling is not ideal for the reason you've cited but it works at keeping them from falling out.
you could also use scotch tape... no chance of scratching coins, but there are also downsides with this method
I have around a dozen albums with coins in SAFLIPs in archive safe pages. I am at the point where I always make sure that there is an orientation on the binders to indicate which side is up. If I need to move for any significant distance, they get wrapped from head to toe in plastic to avoid leakage.
Personally, having seen the long-term effects of PVC pages on coins, I'd purchase a cardboard 2x2 box...
@recoinect Another alternative would be to buy the Eagle replacement pages for 2x2 holders, but they aren't cheap. http://www.eaglecoinholders.com/new...ucts_id=170&osCsid=g5r7rml2imf604263s90fc1lb0 Chris
Here's what I do with four pages of items for sale. Cut a piece of nylon filament tape about 1½ inches long. Fold over one end, sticky side to sticky side, making a little non-sticky tab. There's enough left of the tape to stick it over the opening, and with the tab, it's easy to pull off (and to replace).
I just buy new ones and then stack all the old ones together under heavy books.. Maybe in a few years the old ones will be usable again. If not, I'll just recycle them.
I double checked, and there's not enough space to use staples. As to not holding the album upside down...try telling that to the viewer when the backside of the vinyl pages show the reverse of the coin with an upside down orientation..LOL Maybe scotch tape would be best. Too, I'll check on the eagle replacement pages as Chris suggested. Thanks to all!
Put the 2x2's in sideways. That way you can hold the album with the hinge horizontal allowing you to see the coins' obverse correctly and then simply flipping the page up to see the reverse, also in correct orientation.
